Azerbaijan denies entry to Member of Bundestag Albert Weiler (CDU), who was expected to accompany German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her trip to the three South Caucasian countries – Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, BILD reports.
Weiler is Vice-Chairman of the German-South Caucasian parliamentary group and visited Nagorno Karabakh twice in 2014 and 2016.
According to the source, negotiations with the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Germany produced no results, as the decision comes from the highest government circles.
Weiler will now refrain from entering Azerbaijan. “I have great concerns about peace in the region and would like to convey my anxiety,” Weiler told BILD.
“This action against a democratically elected representative has nothing to do with democracy,” the lawmaker says.
